Hiring Requirements

Police Officer

Definition:

Under the direction of a Sergeant or other supervisory officer within the Police Department, performs general duty police work involved with the protection of life and property throughout Middletown Township; prevents violation of statutes and ordinances; investigates and suppresses disturbances; investigates complaints; assists the public by disseminating information; promotes community policing; performs administrative support tasks; does related work as required.

Examples of Work:

  • Patrols an assigned area during a specific shift.
  • Examines unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints through surveillance or other methods and makes arrests of persons who violate laws and ordinances.
  • Accompanies prisoners to headquarters, court, or other specific destinations.
  • Testifies in court as the arresting officer.
  • Directs traffic and either arrests or gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws.
  • Attends fires or accidents as directed, gives all possible assistance, and prepares necessary reports detailing investigations.
  • Promotes community policing programs and policies.
  • Participates in high-risk tactical operations or hostage situations. Uses a police weapon at a level of proficiency when justified.
  • Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications while concurrently operating a police vehicle.
  • Works with specially trained K-9 police dogs.
  • Conducts crime scene investigations for the detection of latent impressions and other physical evidence.
  • Promotes the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in area schools.
  • Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public.
  • Operates a radio patrol car or patrol wagon as required.
  • Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.

Requirements:

  • Education:

    Graduation from a high school or possession of a GED certificate. Upon hire, uncertified applicants will be required to successfully complete Pennsylvania Act 120 training to receive certification as a Police Officer. After hire, applicants must continue to meet current Municipal Police Officer Education & Training Commission standards as required.

  • Age:

    Applicants must be at least 21 years of age on the closing date for applications.

  • Citizenship:

    Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America.

  • License:

    Appointee will be required to possess a valid Pennsylvania's driver's license.

  • Residency:

    Within six months of completion of probationary period, all police officers must reside within a fifteen (15) mile radius of the Township borders, excluding the City of Philadelphia.

  • Note:

    Applicants will be subject to a security check of their backgrounds in addition to drug and alcohol, psychological, physical and polygraph tests.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws enforced within Middletown Township.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job without causing a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others.
  • Ability to identify potential crime situations or traffic hazards and take preventative action.
  • Ability to load, unload, aim, and fire a handgun, shotgun, or other agency firearm from a variety of body positions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal courteously, but firmly with the general public.
  • Ability to maintain composure and operate efficiently under high stress situations.
  • Ability to prepare concise detailed written reports.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

Working Conditions:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Police Officers are assigned to rotating 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts on a regular basis, including weekends and holidays. In addition, overtime and emergency situations may arise which require the officer to remain on duty for extended periods of time. Instantaneous reactions may be required in emergency situations, therefore officers must remain alert and aware at all times. Reasonable accommodation will be allowed for individuals requiring hearing and visual corrections, however work may involve extensive physical exertion such as running, climbing and jumping over or under obstacles in pursuit of criminal suspects requiring the ability to use both arms and both legs effectively. Police Officers may also be required to lift, drag or use other means to move injured persons or persons in dangerous situations. Much time is spent in a patrol car maintaining a presence in the community. Officers may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and may be required to assist citizens stranded due to weather related emergencies. Police Officers may also be subject to verbal and physical abuse by suspects or other people encountered in antagonistic situations. In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, all police officers may be subject to periodic testing of physical agility after hire.

Physical Demands:

Applicants must successfully complete the Township administered physical agility test prior to taking the written examination. This test includes the following portions:

  • dragging a simulated person weighing 153 pounds over a distance of (50) feet within (20) seconds
  • firing a trigger fifteen times per hand in a period of 20 seconds
  • changing a tire on a police vehicle, including jacking the car and removing and replacing the tire
  • completing a quarter mile run in one hundred (100) seconds or less
  • completing a five-foot window climb and run of twenty feet and back within fifteen (15) seconds or less.

This examination tests the above physical skills under controlled, mostly ideal conditions. During the course of official duties, a Police Officer may be required to utilize these skills under adverse or less than ideal conditions. During the course of official duties, circumstances encountered may differ from the above controlled conditions and the Police Officer must be prepared to adapt to the particular situation encountered.
