General Crime Prevention

Vacant Home Check

Upon request the police department will give special attention to your home while you are on vacation. Simply contact the police department at the business number (215) 750-3845. Be prepared to give the following information:

  • Your name, address and telephone number
  • Dates of departure and return
  • Information about lights on timers, cars in driveway, alarms, etc.
  • The name, address and telephone number of anyone who has a key for your house or who will be checking on your residence.

Operation Indentification

Operation Identification is a program to discourage theft and recover stolen property in your neighborhood. It requires you to identify, mark, and list your valuable items of property. This effort acts as a direct deterrent to theft because stolen items bearing etched identification numbers are more difficult to sell, easily recoverable and can be linked with specific burglaries, making prosecutions more likely.

Five Step Program

  1. Obtain the engraving pen from the police department.
  2. Engrave your driver’s license number followed by an abbreviation of Pennsylvania on all your valuables. A driver’s license is best because police everywhere can use it to trace ownership almost instantly.
    Example: 12345678 PA
  3. Photograph your valuables that you choose not to engrave (heirlooms, antiques, and coin collections).
  4. Compile an itemized list of all valuables (both photographed and marked). Keep this list and photographs in a secure place with other important papers. These will serve as vital reference sources in case of burglary or fire.
  5. Place the window decal sticker declaring you are a participant in Operation Identification in obvious visible locations.

Special tips

  • Use only one number for the entire family.
  • Mark all removable parts of the item.
  • Make engraved figures large enough to be easily discernible without defacing them.
  • Mark number in an obvious place on each item.

Items to be marked

All items of value should be marked, which include the following "choice" items for burglars:

  • Fishing and golf equipment
  • Televisions, tape players, stereos, computers
  • Cameras, typewriters, projectors
  • Bicycles, guns, musical instruments
  • Lawn mowers, snow blowers, expensive tools
  • Jewelry, furs (can be marked using an indelible pen on the pelt beneath the lining)
  • “Mark it to Keep it!”

Business and Home Security Survey

Business and home security surveys are available through the Middletown Township Police Department. Any Middletown Township resident or business owner can arrange to have a trained crime prevention officer come to their home or business and give security tips to improve security.

Crime prevention officers are also available to give talks on crime prevention topics to groups. If you are interested, please call the Middletown Township Police Department at (215) 750-3845 and ask for Sgt. Mellus.
