D.A.R.E.

The Middletown Township Police Department, in cooperation with the Neshaminy School District and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, has instituted the nationally acclaimed D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in its elementary schools. Started in Middletown Township in 1992, the program is now in eight schools.

D.A.R.E. is a 17 - week drug prevention program in which a uniformed police officer instructs 5th grade students on the dangers of drug use. The students also learn how to say no and what to do when offered drugs. The curriculum includes lessons on the consequences of using drugs; self-esteem; peer pressure; stress; assertiveness; and how to prevent violence.

When not instructing the 5th graders, the D.A.R.E. Officer has the opportunity to visit the other grades/classrooms. The topic of instruction may include: avoiding drugs, bicycle safety, personal safety (stranger danger), or any topic the classroom teacher suggests.

The lessons learned in D.A.R.E. are enhanced with the cooperation and support of parents. Honest communication with our children is the best defense against the dangers of drug use.

Several community members have supported the Middletown Township D.A.R.E. program through donations. These contributions are used exclusively for classroom supplies and materials for the students. If there are any questions regarding donations, please call (215) 750-3845, ext. 202.
