Middletown Township Public Works

The Middletown Township Department of Public Works maintains approximately 134.16 miles of roads within the Township. The Department is also responsible for maintaining over 600 acres of park, open space and recreation lands owned by Middletown Township, except the Middletown Country Club. The Department employs two (2) mechanics who are responsible to maintain Township vehicles operated by the police and other departments, certain off-road vehicles such as tractors and backhoes, pickup trucks, dump trucks, and other motorized equipment. This department is also responsible for street light maintenance in all areas of the Township. There are approximately 2,700 street lights maintained by the Township. The Department is also charged with caring for all 9 Township-owned buildings and structures.

Important Winter Snow Information

In order to provide a fair and uniform resolution to disputes involving mailboxes damaged by the Township’s snow removal operations, the following policies concerning repair/replacement of mailboxes is as follows:

  • All mailboxes should be securely fastened to a sturdy post which is sufficiently anchored in the ground to resist the impact of plowed snow.
  • In accordance with current postal guidelines, the mailbox should be at least eight (8) inches from the front face of the curb or edge of pavement in order to prevent contact by the plow itself. The height of the bottom of the mailbox should be between 42” and 48” from the road surface.
  • If it is determined a mailbox was struck by a Township plow or Township snow removal vehicle, the Township will reimburse the owner fifty ($50.00) dollars for the cost of a new post and mailbox. The Township will not repair or replace any mailboxes or posts.
  • The owner has forty eight (48) hours from the end of a snow event to submit a written claim to the Dept. of Public Works, 700 Veterans Highway, Levittown, PA 19056 to request reimbursement.
  • An authorized Township representative will perform an actual sight inspection of the damage and only when the Township’s plow/vehicle is found to have made direct contact with the mailbox will a claim be honored. Reimbursements will not be made when the box is knocked over by snow or slush that is pushed by the plow.
  • A mailbox or post will not be considered for reimbursement if the post shows signs of dry rot or is other wise unstable. Snowplow operators make every attempt to maintain lower speeds when plowing in areas where mailboxes are present, however, occasionally higher speeds must be maintained to contend with heavy wet snow and slush!

Middletown Township’s mission throughout the winter is to maintain safe and passable roadways. Keeping roads open in the winter often means plowing deep snow as far to the edge of the roadway as possible to allow for additional accumulations. With that in mind the Township reminds residents that depositing snow from sidewalks and/or driveways into the roadway, either by shovel or snow blower is PROHIBITED and is subject to a fine of not more then one thousand dollars ($1,000) plus costs. (Chapter 436, Article I), (ord. 78-22).

DEPOSIT SNOW ONTO YOUR YARD, NOT THE ROADWAY!
