Energy Conservation - Save Some Green While Living Green

US Primary Energy ConsumptionBuildings use a whopping 40% of our energy use and generate almost the same amount of our carbon dioxide emissions. (Source: EPA) You can help with this problem and save money by reducing the amount of electricity and fuel used in your home for heating, lighting and cooling.

This chart shows where most energy is used in our homes. The largest expenditure is for space heating so focusing on this area of your home will likely provide the best return on your investment of time and money. Adding insulation and sealing up drafts can help your heating bill and make you more comfortable in your home.

This figure shows a typical problem in some Levittown homes - a break in the envelope of insulation that should surround your entire house to keep the heat in and the cold out. In the photos you can clearly see the result of this short circuiting in that the snow is melting off the roof from the warm air exiting the house. Your heating bill isn't the only thing going through the roof!

Problems with heat loss are not limited to 1950's era houses. A common problem in many homes is heat escaping through roof penetrations. Going up in your attic on a Saturday with some cans of insulating foam to seal around plumbing vents and electrical boxes and you will feel more comfortable immediately. Insulation recommendations have changed over the years. The Department of Energy now recommends R49 for the ceiling and R19 for the walls of homes in our area. The amount of insulation you have in your 1980 to 1990 home is not likely to meet this new standard. Dollar for dollar adding insulation is the cheapest and best way to save energy and money on your heating and cooling.

Some problems are not visible without special tools or help. This is an infrared photo of the walls of a house that can see right through the drywall to identify heat loss. There are gaps in the insulation behind the wall that show up darker in the photo. A comprehensive energy audit of your home can help you identify and prioritize the biggest energy waste in your home and figure out which ones you should tackle first.
